Speed is the first impression a visitor gets. Before a single word is read, the browser has already decided whether the site feels quick or sluggish.
Start with images: they are usually the heaviest part of a page. Serving modern formats such as WebP and sizing each image to the space it occupies often cuts page weight in half.
Next, look at third-party scripts. Every widget, tracker and font adds a request. Keep the ones that earn their place and load the rest asynchronously so they never block the first paint.
Caching is the cheapest performance win. A properly configured page cache lets the server answer most visits without touching the database at all.
Finally, measure. Tools that report real-user timings show what your visitors actually experience, which is often different from a quick test on a fast office connection.
